old iron phurba used by monks for prayers and rituals in Ladakh. dates 17th century
The triple-bladed ritual dagger essentially embodies the powerful Buddha-activity of the wrathful deity Vajrakila, the “indestructible Spike”, whose meditation practice is particularly effective in annihilating all obstructions. The teachings of Vajrakila were brought to Tibet by Padmasambhava and disseminated in the early Nyingma traditions. Also known as Kila, its triangular-section bladeand the three wrathful heads that crown its handle, symbolize the destruction of the “three poisons” of ignorance, desire and aversion.
